In 2004, Colorado West Regional Mental Health Center took on a $10 million debt to build a new psychiatric hospital after three other hospitals closed their psychiatric wings, leaving absolutely no psychiatric hospital capacity in the entire western half of the state. The debt on this new facility, however, was consuming all the financial resources of Colorado West, and the entire system was facing foreclosure and bankruptcy. Through a grassroots advocacy effort and partnerships with funders, companies and government, Colorado West met all its financial obligations, while maintaining services in the community. In this session, we'll discuss strategies for meeting challenges through grassroots advocacy.
