Colorado Nonprofit Association's April 3 Recovery Act Forum

  1. The USDA Forest Service's first set of projects is for construction and maintenance of facilities, roads, trails and for abandoned mine mitigation and for wildland fire management. The amount for Colorado could be about $5.1 million. For more information, go to www.usda.gov/recovery www.usda.gov/recovery and click on Forest Service Recovery Efforts.
  2. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) anticipates about $15.7 million for Colorado projects relating to construction, maintenance, trails and wildlife habitat. The BLM may have interactive maps showing project locations in the state. Periodically check http://recovery.doi.gov/blm/
  3. While both agencies are still formulating specific plans and projects for the use of Recovery Act funds, nonprofits are eligible partners and should be thinking of their own proposals that will create jobs in the nonprofit that may assist the federal agencies in getting their projects accomplished. For example, nonprofits may offer to hire a volunteer coordinator to get volunteers for agency projects.
  4. Don't wait for the agencies to announce specific projects. Start talking to local contacts for the agencies now.
  5. Because timelines will be short when agencies identify projects, nonprofits should act now to:
  6. Nonprofits may find opportunities from the Colorado State Forest Service, which will receive federal Recovery Act money, for weed, fire and beetle kill projects.
  7. Nonprofits may not have to match federal funds with dollars but instead, in kind services, such as providing labor, will suffice for the matching requirement.
  8. Transparency and accountability are key under the Recovery Act. Therefore, nonprofits should be prepared to keep track of exactly how they are spending the money and to document what they accomplished with the funds.
