Federal Stimulus Funding and K-12 Education in Colorado (Alex Medler, VP for Research and Analysis, Colorado Children's Campaign)

  • Nonprofits are most likely to access competitive, discretionary grants such as:
    • "Race to the Top"
    • Funding available for increasing equitable teach distribution, data management, academic standards and assessment, and supporting struggling schools.
    • At least $4.35 billion will be available for states to apply for. States that receive Incentive Grants must give at least 50 percent of the grants to local educational agencies in subgrants based on the local agencies' relative shares of funding under Title I, Part A.     • Funding will be awarded in fall of 2009 and spring of 2010
  • "Invest in What Works and Innovation"
    • Funding available to eligible entities that have already demonstrated their ability to make "significant gains in closing the achievement gap." (CDE "Invest in What Works and Innovation" Grants Overview)
    • Up to $650 million dollars nationally "awarded to (1) local education agencies or (2) a partnership between a non-profit organization and one or more local education agencies or a consortium of schools." (CDE "Invest in What Works and Innovation" Grants Overview)
    • Funding will be awarded in fall of 2009 and spring of 2010.
