Job Description: 

Unison Housing Partners, the Housing Authority of Adams County Colorado, disrupts poverty through the execution of socially conscious community development.  Our primary strategies - affordable housing development in areas of emerging opportunity, programs to support self-reliance and community organizing for policy change – target the long-term impacts of poverty in Adams County. 

The Community Organizer works within Unison Housing Partner’s affordable housing communities to support the growth of relationships and community identity among residents, supports residents as they identify issues of mutual concern, fosters the development of leadership and advocacy skills among residents, and supports resident advocacy for policy at multiple levels within the community (i.e. landlord, school officials, city council, state legislators, benefit officers) to improve their lives.

Unison Housing Partners Family and Community Vitality department brings focus to engagement and power-building among resident members within its affordable housing communities to influence the conditions and policies that impact resident members where they live and within the broader community; and build a sense of belonging which leads to shared purpose and collective action.  

The Community Organizer will execute community organizing strategies, tactics and processes that achieve organizing goals within the 14 affordable housing communities managed by Unison Housing Partners. The ideal candidate will bring significant community organizing experience in one or more of the following areas: neighborhood/place-based organizing, organizing for change in issues such as housing justice, economic justice and food justice, and asset-based community development. Further, candidates should demonstrate creativity in shaping and implementing organizing strategies that blend multiple approaches to meet the unique needs and opportunities of an affordable housing community.

The Affordable Housing Communities - Community Organizer will report to Lead Community Organizer. She/he will work collaboratively with Unison staff and key community organizational partners in support of their organizing goals.

Areas of Responsibility

Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • With the Lead Community Organizer and key community partners, implement a community organizing model tailored for affordable housing communities.
  • Provide overall direction to and coordination/evaluation of community organizing efforts.
  • Engage residents through one-on-ones, celebrations and events that build relationship and a sense of community.
  • Provide training and information on key community issues, advocacy skills, facilitation and group leadership skills
  • With resident leaders, design and support campaigns to change policy and conditions that improve their lives
  • Work collaboratively with Unison’s Community Resource Navigator to refer individual residents that require support in accessing resources and/or building self-reliance through coaching, case management and programs
  • Create communication and promotional literature for distribution, such as newsletters, brochures or flyers in Spanish and English.
  • Provide analysis and reporting of program progress and success
  • Budget development and management
  • Other duties as assigned

Community Organizing

Brings significant community organizing experience and knowledge.

Social Justice Analysis

Demonstrates understanding of the historical and systemic context of marginalized communities and the barriers that have prevented low income people, people of color, and disabled community members from accessing opportunity in our society.

Equitable Development

Is knowledgeable about the dynamics of gentrification and displacement and familiar with strategies associated with equitable development in communities.  

Education/Experience

Minimum of five years of experience working with structurally marginalized populations and familiar with community organizing strategies.  Experience in neighborhood organizing focused on community development issues such as housing and economic development is a plus.

Requirements/Qualifications
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English – written and spoken

  • Effectively facilitates meetings and community gatherings.
  • Demonstrates a high level of verbal, writing, and listening skills.
  • Proficient with MS Office (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook).
  • Fluent in the use of various cell phone and social media communication tools and platforms.
  • Able to work with people with mental health, disability, substance abuse, legal, and financial issues.
  • Daily attendance in the office and/or off-site locations.
