Job Title: Controller

General Purpose:

The Controller is responsible for providing strategic and financial leadership and direction for the Organization through collaboration with the Senior Management team in establishing short-term and long-range goals, plans, and policies. Other responsibilities include overseeing the production of all financial data and analysis utilized by Senior Management in its decision-making capacities and ensuring the delivery of accurate and timely financial information. The Controller will help foster an environment that promotes growth, innovation and process improvement throughout the Organization.

Areas of Responsibility

Duties & Responsibilities:


  • Partner with Senior Management regarding operational issues as they arise; provide strategic recommendations based on financial analysis, projections and revenue/expense analysis.
  • Administratively pull together and hold operational directors accountable for submitting budgets, and review to ensure that budgets are reasonable and consistent with Organization goals.
  • Establish credibility throughout the Organization as an effective developer of solutions to business challenges.
  • Evaluate the financial/accounting structure within the Organization and team.
  • Plan for continual improvement of the efficiency and effectiveness of the group, as well as providing individuals with professional and personal growth with emphasis on providing opportunities for advancement, where possible and appropriate.
  • Optimize banking relationships and initiate appropriate on-going strategies to enhance the Organization’s cash position.
  • Partner with the Senior Management team to gain sufficient understanding of project budget performance.
  • Identify and oversee technology solution upgrades, manage timelines, and select vendors and platforms.
  • Provide direction for the Organization’s finance department through the creation of long-term and short-term strategic goals (e.g., reporting packages containing financial dashboards and benchmark comparisons), and continually monitor and assess goal achievement.
  • Formulate and execute the successful implementation of both long and short-term initiatives.
  • Develop goals, key performance indicators and meet deadlines.

Financial Reporting

  • Review financial budgets and forecasts.
  • Oversee accounting operational process design, reporting efficiency and effectiveness of internal controls.
  • Analysis and interpretation of accounting information in order to assess financial results in terms of performance against prior periods, forecasts and budgets.
  • Ensure accounting adjustments are appropriately recorded and understand explanations for significant fluctuations from expected/forecasted results.
  • Oversee the timely preparation of monthly executive reporting packages.
  • Develop and lead regular financial reporting updates with the Senior Management team presenting financial results and providing explanations for successes and failures to the Board of Directors, as well as actions to improve performance.  
  • Oversees annual third-party audits and tax preparation ensuring they are completed within prescribed deadlines and with minimal operational impact through proactive planning and preparation initiative.
  • Manage cash flow and forecasted cash position, present and explain significant projection inputs and methodology.


  • Provide primary oversight of the Accounting Department, including direct supervision of the four FTE accounting support staff.
  • Develop and supervise month end and year end close procedures.
  • Hire and train accounting clerical personnel with skills sufficient to adequately perform professional responsibilities.
  • Delegate daily work assignments based on knowledge of department personnel skill sets, capacity and Organization priorities.

Technical Expertise

  • Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP.
  • Nonprofit experience a plus.
  • Understanding of industry specific laws, compliance requirements and regulations.
  • Provide technical financial advice and knowledge to others within and outside the financial discipline.
  • Review complex account reconciliations.
  • Identify and enroll in on-going continuing professional education (“CPE”) training classes, with a minimum expectation of 40 CPE hours in a calendar year, and 2 to 4 of those CPE hours coming from ethics courses.
  • Strong understanding of relationships within the financial reports and statements issued by financial and operational accounting and utilized by Senior Management.
  • Ability to interface and collaborate effectively with Senior Management and leadership in partner Organizations.
  • Intermediate to advanced level skills with Microsoft office products.
  • A hands-on leader with integrity and a desire to steer a dynamic, goal-driven financial environment.
  • Technical knowledge of the intricacies of accounting for non-profits a plus.
  • BA/BS Degree in Accounting
  • 7-10 years of leadership/management experience
  • Licensed Certified Public Accountant
  • Specific industry and/or related industry experience a plus
  • 7+ years of analysis and preparation of financial statements and operational financial reporting, including balance sheet, income statement, and management reporting.

Other Requirements: This position requires some time out of the office, limited travel, and active participation in programs that occur outside of a traditional work schedule.


Salary: Commensurate with experience

Position Type: 40-hour per week; exempt; qualifies for all benefit packages including health vision and dental insurance, life insurance, STD and LTD, 401K plan with match, four weeks' paid vacation and all Jewish holidays.

Working Conditions: This job can be physically demanding (which can include travel, bending, reaching, squatting, kneeling, twisting, constant walking, frequent sitting, and maintaining close visual attention to write reports; occasional lifting up to 30 pounds).
