About our Monitoring and Evaluation Role

We are looking for a full-time Monitoring & Evaluation Manager to join Street Business School's team to support a robust Monitoring, Evaluation, Research and Learning (MERL) program. We are on the forefront of helping women living in poverty transform their lives through entrepreneurial training, and we are looking for an amazing person to continue to capture and articulate our impact as we scale globally to reach one million women.  This position will have an opportunity to help pioneer new ways of measuring the effectiveness of our social franchise model and will suggest other creative ways to interpret data and tell our story.

This job has your name on it if you:

  • Have deep understanding of how to build and maintain simple but robust measurement systems, and to work with a range of partner organizations to gather data.
  • Are a data geek who loves diving into numbers and doing analysis, but also have a brilliant ability to translate them into powerful and accessible communications that help tell a story of transformation.
  • Are an evaluation visionary with the ability to demonstrate impact in a variety of different ways
  • Know how to walk the line between generating useful impact stats and getting lost in a sea of survey tools and data
  • Have deep listening skills and use them to help meet the needs of the MERL program
  • Require little oversight because your follow-through and detail-orientation is to be envied
  • Are enamored with impact, and can integrate into, support and lead an existing culture of fun, no-drama, real hands-on teamwork, results focused, and can-do attitude
Areas of Responsibility

What you’ll do for us:

We are looking for a rock star to help us dive deeper into evaluating the effectiveness of the replication of the SBS model through partner organizations, tracking our ongoing impact, and maintaining an SMS based M&E system. Get your running shoes on...this is both a strategic and tactical position that has responsibility for taking our MERL program to a whole new level.  In just one week, you might dream up new strategy, crunch numbers, test our technology, and write up our recent findings for the Stanford Social Innovation Review. 

Key focal areas include:

I.Oversee our existing organizational framework for M&E – why, who, what, when, where

  • Why – How do we use data to support organizational learning, partner learning, influencing the sector, communication and fundraising?
  • What – Regularly review processes for data collection, analysis, and reporting .
  • When – Update current M&E data annually to align with existing reporting cycles; include quantitative and qualitative external evaluations on a somewhat regular basis
  • Who – Invest in staff dedicated to ongoing M&E
  • Where – Recommend where we should be focusing our M&E bandwidth for maximum benefit, including diving into more specific questions from time to time.

II. Oversee our existing internal data collection

  • Review log frame and what is being measured
  • Assess what the explicit goals of each program and the process in place to gather both quantitative and qualitative data
  • Review existing data for new ways/categories for analysis and oversee cleaning, analysis and reporting
  • Oversee and improve current M&E technology platform

III. Innovation

  • Understand needs of all departments to advise on where new data collection should be prioritized
  • Track best practice in the M&E field and bring innovation and recommendations to our work
  • Track promising practices in the sector that might inform our approach and disseminate to appropriate teams
  • Recommend how we not only emulate what others are doing, but create new ideas, categories, strategies that help us lead the field

IV. External evaluations

  • Oversee and liaise with RCT and other external evaluations being conducted by third parties
  • Plan for future RCT or external evaluations, including creating partnerships with research institutions and funders
  • Coordinate on the dissemination of evaluation results to create maximum credibility and opportunities for growth

V. Reporting

  • Determine the frequency of reporting to align with organizational goals and cycles
  • Lead the dissemination of evaluation results ensuring that information is translated into content that can be easily understood by a broad range of audiences
  • Determine ideal channels and audiences for results to be disseminated:
    • Develop depth of content periodically and then adapt to different formats
    • Website/social media info graphics
    • Donor reports
    • Annual M&E summary
    • Slide deck
    • Conference presentations
    • Academic papers
  • This position will directly supervise an M&E employee located in the SBS Uganda office and interns from time to time.
  • Any other duties directly in line with this role
  • 3-5 years of monitoring, evaluation, research and learning experience with increasing responsibility and tangible results. Includes strong math and data analysis skills, and a fluency for capturing data in a way that will support global scale up.
  • Experience working with databases including a technology based M&E or data collection system and a willingness to apply these skills to an entrepreneurship program. (TaroWorks/SalesForce experience is advantageous but not necessary).
  • Educational background in M&E, statistics or development studies preferred. Project management and computer science may also be considered. Work experience in these areas can also be considered.
  • Unstoppable passion for staying up-to-date with best practice in the development world and putting that knowledge into use, including trends like lean data, women's confidence research, entrepreneurship work, and interactive tools to share data.
  • A high level of focus with great attention to detail and ability to meet tight deadlines on several large projects with interconnecting tasks and pieces is essential.
  • Experience working with or assessing entrepreneurial programs or women’s empowerment program for NGOs preferred.
  • Outstanding writing skills in various formats (we would love to see a sample). Ability to speak powerfully when sharing impact data is a plus.
  • Strong project management experience that drives efficiency and excellence in all aspects of work.
  • Ability not just to interpret data but to provide a new perspective to imagine new and creative ways the data can be utilized.
  • Strong English language and general communication skills a must.


This is a full-time position with a beginning salary range of $60,000 - $63,000 annually depending on experience. Benefits are great including health care, dental and vision benefits, participation in a retirement savings plan, paid vacation, sick time, sabbatical and holidays, including an organization-wide holiday closure.
