Great governing boards lead through the establishment of effective policy. Your board of directors is cumulatively responsible for everything your organization does, or fails to do. The only way they can effective fulfill this responsibility is to govern through the establishment of board policy.

This training identifies advantages of a policy-based governance model and how to implement the transition to this highly-effective governance process. Policy-based governance in mutually empowering to both the board and executive leadership.

Learning Objectives

  1. Learn the conditions that lead organizations to adopt a policy-based governance model.

  2. Understand the unique role of the board and the CEO/Executive Director in leading the organization.

  3. Engage in high-level dialog with your peers on the merits of transitioning your governing boards to a policy orientation.

  4. Gain an understanding of the different types of board policy through reviewing real-world examples.

  5. Receive a step-by step guide on how to work with their board to develop effective policy.
