Letter to House members on 217 Law Enforcement Integrity

Jun 13, 2020

June 10, 2020

Dear Members of the House of Representatives:

Colorado Nonprofit Association (Association) urges your support of SB20-217, Concerning Law Enforcement Integrity.  This bill is about police practices and law enforcement accountability, but it is also about taking meaningful action to end systemic racism.

The Association has 1,994 nonprofit, business and individual members statewide.  All of the missions of the Association’s members are impacted by systemic racism: health, education, arts, hunger, recreation – there is no exception.  As people who have committed their careers to build and support thriving communities, nonprofits must act for racial justice or the work of the nonprofit sector will be in vain.

We have reached this moment in our nation and state because of a series of publicized acts of police violence against black lives.  And we know there have been many before—too many.  Black lives matter.  Prohibiting excessive use of force and enacting meaningful accountability for law enforcement officers are significant steps to dismantling systemic racism.  We appreciate that the Senate recognized the urgency for change in our state, adopting the bill with broad bi-partisan support.

A year from now, five years from now, a generation from now, we want to be able to look back on 2020 as the tipping point for significant change because enough is enough, and silence was never an appropriate response.

Colorado Nonprofit Association urges your support of SB20-217.

Sincerely,
