JOB SUMMARY: The Finance Manager is responsible for daily accounting operations including financial reporting, budgeting, management of federal grants, preparation of financial statements, forecasting, analysis of expenditures of programs and projects, generating effective financial models and developing recommendations to help guide business decisions.

  • Verifies, allocates, and reconciles details of business transactions to appropriate accounts.
  • Ensures/maintains cash books, daily journals and ledgers including accounts payable, accounts receivable and payroll.
  • Responds to vendor inquiries and resolves outstanding issues.
  • Completes monthly bank account reconciliations
  • Calculates complex journal entries
  • Ensures on-time, full cycle month end close
  • Performs account research and analyses as needed. Traces and adjusts errors.
  • Prepares monthly financial statements and analyses.
  • Generates budget projections and comparisons.
  • Prepares weekly, monthly and periodic program reports for program directors and mangers.
  • Prepares weekly, monthly and periodic program reports for program directors and managers.
  • Assists with annual budget process.
  • Coordinates all financial and management Coordinates all financial and management audits throughout the year.
  • Supervises record keeping of all financial and related information.
  • Assists with cash flow management.
  • Seeks opportunities to improve systems for internal controls and communication and to reduce costs and increase revenues.
  • Develops and maintains a complete understanding of the accounting and finance operations of the organization.
  • Maintains thorough understanding of all program requirements relating to specific government and foundation funders.
  • Advises program directors and managers on financial compliance.

  • Works with key management staff to make recommendations related to VGJ’s financial growth and stability.
  • Supervises work, trains and evaluates performance of assigned personnel.

QUALIFICATIONS Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related field from an accredited college or university; plus a minimum of five years of related experience in professional level accounting including federal grants tracking and reporting, financial reporting, AP/AR, GL, payroll, and budgeting.
  • Two years of prior supervisory experience required.
  • CPA certification is preferred.
  • Must be at expert level with financial software applications.
  • Prior experience with non-profit management is desirable.
  • Military experience given preference.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to comprehend and apply the financial policies procedures and goals of VGJ .
  • Thorough knowledge of principles and practices of fund accounting.
  • Thorough knowledge of the general principles, methods, techniques, and practices of automated accounting.
  • Skill in accurately posting, balancing, and reconciling transactions.
  • Skill in accurately performing complex mathematical computations.
  • Ability to use standard computer equipment and software including word processing, data base management, spreadsheet application and electronic communications.
  • Skilled in the use of specialized accounting software.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to effectively supervise and evaluate assigned personnel.
  • Ability to establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees, vendors, and the general public.
  • Ability to work independently and to demonstrate initiative in learning new tasks.
